Updated 17 February 2026

There are over half a million teachers in the UK playing a vital role in the development of young people. While seeing pupils or students learning and succeeding is rewarding in itself, some additional perks for hard-working teachers seems more than earned – which is where this guide comes in.

We've rounded up special discounts that teachers (and in many cases those working in other education establishment roles) can get for food, clothing, days out and more.

Over the coming months, we'll be adding more ways teachers can get discounts. If there are any you use we're not featuring, please let us know.

Access 1,500+ offers via the FREE Discounts for Teachers scheme

Discounts for Teachers is a free membership scheme offering deals for teachers (including retired) and many others working in the education sector such as teaching assistants, office staff, school cleaners and canteen staff (see below for the full eligibility list).

To join, you'll need to provide your work email address or a valid document proving your place of work such as an ID card, recent payslip, or P60 certificate.

Discounts for Teachers says it has over 1,500 deals across shopping, travel, insurance, mobiles, motoring and more, including 20% off Burger King, 20% off TransPennine Express, and 15% off Go Ape. You're able to view deals at the Discounts for Teachers website before signing up, and we've listed some of the top offers in our deals for teachers round-up below.

You won't receive a physical card as all deals are claimed through its website or the Discounts for Teachers app (includes app-exclusive deals).

  • All School & College Staff

  • All University Staff

  • All Preschool & Nursery Staff

  • Teachers

  • Lecturer/Professor

  • Director/Principal

  • Headteacher/Deputy/Assistant

  • Leader/Coordinator

  • Private Academic/Non Academic

Discounts on high-street brands, food, travel & more via the FREE Teacher Perks scheme

Teacher Perks is another free scheme giving discounts for teachers and school staff, including up to 30% off Hilton Hotels, 20% off food at TGI Fridays on a Sunday to Friday, 20% off Weird Fish, and 10% off Nuffield Health gym membership.

You can also occasionally get paid between £5 and £300 for taking part in surveys, interviews, reviews or focus groups.

You can sign up online if you're staff at a school, college, nursery, or university – you'll need to provide your work email address, school name, and job role.

£5 Blue Light Card gives access to 1,000s of in-store & online deals

Since 2008, the Blue Light Card scheme has been a way for NHS and emergency services workers to access discounts, and in August 2024, it opened to teachers (excludes higher education; see eligibility criteria below).

A Blue Light Card costs £4.99 for two years' access. You'll need your education establishment email address, work ID, or a recent payslip to prove you're eligible for membership.

Which teachers are eligible?

Blue Light Card says teaching and supporting staff in any of the following can sign up:

  • Early years & primary schools

  • Secondary schools & sixth form colleges

  • Special schools, referral units, and centrally employed

What deals can I get?

Blue Light Card says it offers 15,000+ high street and online discounts from large retailers and local businesses, covering fashion, days out, restaurants, holidays and more. You aren't able to see specific deals until after signing up, though we've included some in our list of deals below, including 25% off Beefeater and Pizza Hut, and 10% off Starbucks.

If you use Google Chrome as your internet browser you can also add the free Blue Light Card Chrome extension which, when installed, will automatically check if the website you're on has a Blue Light Card discount available.

If you think you'll save more than a fiver in two years then a Blue Light Card can be worth it. See Blue Light Card FAQs for full information.

Up to 12% cashback at 70+ retailers for teachers with the Ode prepaid card

Teachers (plus NHS and care workers, and those working in charity) can apply for the , which gets up to 12% cashback at over 70 retailers. When we checked, this included Asda and Sainsbury's 2.5%, M&S and Waitrose 3%, Argos and Ikea 4%, Primark 7%, Boots and John Lewis 5%, and Virgin Experience Days 12% – see more brands and cashback.

You'll get the cashback on top of other offers, so it's good for maxing savings. There's a minimum top up of £5 (with prepaid cards, there's no credit check and you can only spend the amount you add to it). Any earned cashback is automatically added to your balance within seven days in most cases and is available to spend when you next top up.

The card is free for the first year, then a £2.99 annual fee kicks in – so remember to cancel then if you find you're not earning much cashback. It's also important to note that after your card's two years old, if you don't use it for 12 months there's a £5 per month inactivity fee.

Any money you deposit is ring-fenced in a separate bank account, so if there are problems with Ode, the money's safe as the bank or building society where your money's held will still retain your cash for you to get back.

The slight risk comes if the bank or building society goes bust, because your cash is NOT protected in this case.

It's best to think of your prepaid card as one that you'll keep cash on for immediate or short-term spending requirements, rather than as a place to store a load of cash for long periods of time.

Before applying, see our full Prepaid cards guide for more need-to-knows.

Top freebies & discounts for teachers

This is our list of top deals currently offered to teachers and education staff. We've made it clear whether you can get the deal just by showing work ID, or if you need to be signed up to a discount scheme such as Discounts for Teachers or Blue Light Card.

These discounts tend to beat those offered to all, but sometimes retailers have short-lived promotions available to everyone that will save you more money, so before using a discount for teachers, it's worth comparing other offers to make sure you're getting the best deal.

Save up to £100 on Macs, iPads and more

Technology giant Apple rarely offers widespread discounts, and its products certainly aren’t MoneySaving, but there's a way to take a bite out of the cost of Macs, iPads and more, and it could save you up to £100 on its top-end products.

Officially, this year-round offer is geared towards university students and teachers, but if you’re neither, you can still be smart and benefit from the discount as the broad criteria means just about anyone can get it.

The amount of education discount you’ll be offered depends on what you’re buying and whether you’re a uni student or a staff member at an education establishment – even if you’re working in the office and not the classroom.

How do you get the discount?

To order online, go to the Apple Education Store* website and select which product you're interested in. You'll then be asked to sign up (or log in) to discount scheme Unidays using your uni or education workplace email address for verification. The education discounts should then be automatically applied. If you're unable to sign up to Unidays or you don't want to give it your data, you can call Apple on 0800 048 0408 and it'll verify you with your ID or acceptance letter and you can continue your purchase over the phone.

Alternatively, go to an Apple Store (find your nearest*) and show your ID card, letter of acceptance or payslip. Parents can also do this on behalf of their child.

Not a student, teacher or other education worker?

Provided you know someone who’s studying at uni or working at a school, college or uni, you can in theory get the discount if that person’s willing to go and buy the goods for you. As far as we can see, this isn’t a breach of the terms and conditions. Of course, you’ll have to decide whether it’s morally okay – as this is a scheme designed specifically for people in education.

Mobile phone contract offers

Ongoing

25% off 3GB+ or 15% off 1GB+ airtime plans

NHS staff and teachers planning to refresh their O2 tariff are eligible for its O2 Open discount* if you apply within 28 days of the start of your O2 Refresh contract with an eligible handset, tablet, or mobile broadband device.

Complete the verification process via the Open portal, and then sign in again to add the discount. See full T&Cs.

Important: Do check that the offer you sign up for is the most suitable, and cheapest offer for you. Don't take O2's word for it that even with the 15% or 25% off it will be the best offer. See our Cheap Mobile Finder to compare deals before you buy.

More info

You can't get the discount with: Pay As You Go, non-O2 Refresh tariffs, sharer plans, business accounts, Sim only deals and contracts not bought directly from O2.

If your airtime agreement includes any other offers or discounts, such as six months' free airtime, you won’t be eligible for O2 Open. There’s no discount available on Apple Watch airtime plans.

Ongoing

Works on its Flex Pay or 12/24-month SIM only plans

If you're a teacher, phone operator EE is offering 20% off your monthly airtime plan when you take out a Flex Pay or 12 or 24-month SIM only plan.

To get the discount, you'll need to sign up and verify your employment with Beans ID to get a discount code. You can then browse available eligible phone plans and enter your code at the checkout. The discount's only available online, not via EE's contact centres or high-street shops.

Important: Check the offer you sign up for is the most suitable, and cheapest deal for you – don't take EE's word for it that even with the 20% off it will be the best offer. See our Cheap Mobile Finder to compare deals before you buy.
